Squidoo Marketing Strategies Lens Awarded a Purple Star

My Squidoo Marketing Strategies lens
was awarded a Purple Star during the week.

According to Squidoo, Purple Stars are awarded for qualities of
excellence:
"...standout lenses, both new and old...Masterpiece lenses. Lenses
making a name for themselves. Lenses trying new things."

The Purple Star is a reflection of Seth Godin's theme in his book,
Purple Cow - be remarkable by being prepared to be different,
to stand-out from the crowd.

Image Marketing (1): How To Use Flickr Effectivley

There are two key tactics you can use with Flickr to increase
the exposure of your website, blog or Squidoo lens.

1. Add the URL of the target website to
your image description on Flickr

The desired URL should be placed at the start of your description
and a related URL can be added at the end.  Just make sure that
there is some obvious connection between the URL and the
image description.

Here's an example from my Flickr account:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ronpass/4315655082/

 2. Add your photos/images to relevant Flickr groups

This action should be taken after you have completed
the photo/image description as above.  Do a search for
groups that are relevant to the subjects of your
photos/images (e.g. location, sport, hobby, niche
area).

For example, I joined a number of groups related to
Queensland and the Sunshine Coast.  You can also
start your own group and submit to it regularly.

Flickr makes it so easy to add a photo to a group that
you have joined - you can do this immediately after
completing the description or go back and do it later.
It is a good thing to get into the habit of doing this
with each upload.  What you have to watch is that
each group has its own individual posting limits
(e.g. two or three photos per day).  So you could
get into the habit of uploading 2 or 3 photos per
day to Flickr and add them to your relevant groups.

We can all learn a lesson from Ed Dale. Within his
30 Day Challenge Plus Masterclass he taught participants
two simple rules for taking quality digital shots (among a
heap of other tactics and strategies).  He then set up his
own Flickr Group for participants to display their photos
taken using his principles of good photography:
30 Day Challenge Plus Photoholics

This is a clever marketing strategy.

Internet Marketing Success - the road less travelled

Well I have just listened to Mike Litman's
The Force That Creates Your Future track on his 'Greatness
Held Hostage' CD.

He makes the point that the difference between medicocrity
and greatness has a lot to do with habits:
People form habits and habits form futures

But it is not just any habit that makes the difference, it's a
distasteful habit:
Successful people make a habit of doing
what they don't like doing

Why would you want to have this habit? Because this habit
determines success.  Just think of all your New Year
resolutions that stay on the shelf or in your diary
(e.g. lose weight, improve your public speaking, etc.)

Why don't they happen? Because you don't want to do
the things that would guarantee your success - changing
your eating habits, going for a walk, getting out of bed early,
taking a course...there are always excuses for not doing
what you don't want to do.

So how come successful people create the habit of
doing what they don't want to do...and unsuccessful
people create the habit of avoiding the unpleasant, difficult
or routine?

Mike's answer is very clear on this point (the essence of his
message):
Unsuccessful people focus on process, successful people
focus on the reward.

Unsuccessful people focus on the unpleasant things
required to achieve a goal (process) while successful people
focus on the end result or desired state (reward).

Mike Litman  offers 3 strategies to move forward
and achieve success:

1. Ask yourself the question, "What is one thing I
don't want to do today that if I did it would
move my life forward?"

2. Ask yourself the question, "How will I benefit from
doing this one action I don't want to do?"

3. Do it NOW (Just Do IT)!

Mike is an energetic and inspirational speaker, so it is well
worth listening to what he has to say in his own inimitable
style:
The Force That Creates Your Future

Giant Squid Open Mike - Monday 18 August 2009

Well I was the guest speaker on BlogTalkRadio for
the Giant Squid Open Mike Show on
Monday 18 August.

This was great fun and a fantastic way to connect to
people and hear their voices. Besides, it is a great
forum for learning about Squidoo and Web 2.0 marketing.

This venture by Joan Adams and Kate Loving Shenk
is very much in line with Seth Godin's philosophy of
collaborative marketing epitomized by the Squidoo
platform itself.

On the 18 August session we talked about:
  • RedGage social bookmarking site
  • How best to use Redgage to promote your Squidoo lenses
  • Long tail keywords
  • Quality comments on social bookmarking/networking sites
  • Developing your Google profile
The Giant Squid Open Mike is open to all Squidoo lensmasters
and is held on Mondays at 4pm Eastern.

To listen to the recorded version of the 18 August session,

Squidoo: Squidoo Lens Design - Montville Queensland

This post discusses the lens design for my 87th lens,
Montville Queensland.

In a previous post, I identified the 7 Top Strategies for
Lens Creation
, so I will use these steps as a framework
for discussing this new lens.

1. Purpose of the Squidoo Lens

This lens was designed to share the beauty and romance
of Montville with others. I wanted to highlight the
panoramic views, romantic accommodation, restaurants
and the unique shopping experience that is Montville.

While I do not promote an affiliate product or service
on this lens, it does provide the opportunity to promote
my email course on Squidoo and increase subscribers
to my Squidoo Marketing Strategies list (some of whom
will eventually buy my Squidoo e-book).

2. Concept of the Squidoo Lens

What I wanted to do with the Squidoo lens was to simulate
the experience of walking down the steep slope at Montville
taking in all the shopping. So I used a vertical layout for
the images, which basically follow the flow of shops and
cafes as you walk down the hill.

I wanted also to act as a guide as people progressed down
the hill, suggesting what they might look at and where they
might take a rest.

3. Lens Design to Meet Concept and Purpose

To create the sense of walking down the Montville hill,
I used a vertical design for laying out the images.
I wanted the visitor to feel as though they were progressing
downwards. The images are basically presented in the order
of the sights that you would see as you moved down the hill.

I used The Black Box Module (consistently) to provide
guidance to the visitor. Here I explained what was
on offer and suggested places to rest and things to see.

[I chose the Black Box Module over The Most Important
Thing Module because it proved to be a better color match.]

4. Keyword Research (where appropriate)

At this stage, I have not undertaken keyword research
as it is not critical to my purpose. I will, however, do some
keyword research to identify tags and longtail keywords
for the lens.

[Normally, if I was focused on an affiliate product, I would
undertake keyword research before deciding the URL of
the Squidoo lens.]

5. Develop Content

The content flowed from my purpose and concept for
the Squidoo lens. I wanted to make people aware of what
was available shopping-wise, to give them a sense of the
panoramic views and introduce the cafes and restaurants.

My primary focus was on the shopping, so I added a
text module where I could highlight the range of shops
available at Montville and provide a link for more
information.

6. Source Images

I had made a weekend visit to Montville in August 2008
and had taken photos with a lens in mind. So I had a ready
stock of photos which I supplemented by adding an image
from Flickr.

7. Revisit, Refine, Link and Promote

JaguarJulie suggested the use of the Photo Gallery Module
which I have added by way of review at the end of the lens.
I did not use this as the central design strategy because
I wanted to create the sense of moving downhill
(not sideways).

When the lens is indexed by Google, I'll add a Featured Lens
module and add the other four lenses I have developed to
feature some aspect of The Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

Promotion is ongoing - uploading a link and individual
photos to RedGage, creating this post and further social
bookmarking of the site. I've mentioned it in a post on
the highly rated Squidoo Marketing blog.

I'll also progressively add more images to the Photo Gallery,
update my tags and add a links module to further
information. The habit of regular updating will
improve the lensrank and increase my Squidoo visitors.

This lens was published three days ago and was ranked
1,000,000+ at the time. As I write this post, it has
already attained a ranking of 22,792.

Key Lesson: Squidoo.com gives you numerous modules
to design your Squidoo lenses. A key principle I advocate
is to create a design to fit the purpose of your lens. If you
want to learn the art of Squidoo Affiliate Marketing,
you can do no better than learn from Super affiliate marketer,
PotPieGirl.

Twitter Traffic Machine Review (after 6 weeks)

I started with the Twitter Traffic Machine on 26 April
2009 - about 6 weeks ago.

At the time I was following about 29 people and had
around 250 followers. I had made a few hundred
tweets/posts.

Now (6 June 2009), my Twitter stats show:

Following: 2846
Followers: 2596
Updates: 1,170

I was reticent at first to purchase the Twitter Traffic
Machine
for three reasons:

1. I wanted to maintain control over the number of people
I follow.

2. I didn't want to be distracted from what else I was doing
with article marketing, Squidoo and blogging.

3. I did not want to spend a lot of time installing a new system.

My objections re the first point have vanished. I originally
just wanted to follow people I knew who would add value to
what I am doing. However, I soon learned the richness
of having a wider group to follow. I have learned so much
and connected with so many more amazing people.

I also learned that far from distracting me, the Twitter
Traffic Machine
has enabled me to leverage my other
activities and expose my blogging, article writing and
Squidoo lens creation to 10 times the number I could
before.

The set-up of the Twitter Traffic Machine involves a
number of simple steps, mainly registering with various
tools and using the checklist provided to integrate them.
However, it's a set-and-forget system where you
continuously reap the benefits. Every day you receive
multiple new followers.

The system has an inbuilt viral affiliate program
which so far has enabled me to earn three times what I paid
for the Twitter Traffic Machine.

From my experience, one of the secrets of success in using
the system is to be focused about what keywords you want
to keep abreast of. I have focused on Squidoo and
affiliate marketing.

You can check out the Twitter Traffic Machine here:
http://bit.ly/155fpE

BTW my stats at 17 June 2009 are:
Following: 3502
Followers: 3190
Updates: 1,380

Squidoo lenses: offline marketing

I had occasion on the weekend to do some fortuitous
offline marketing.

I attended the local Neighbourhood Planning display
in Memorial Park at Bulimba.

While I was discussing local development with the
Council Officer, I mentioned my Squidoo lenses
and video that relate to Bulimba:

video: morning river walk - Bulimba

I know for a fact that the Council Officer passed the
information about these sites to his co-workers.
You never know they may yet end up in a Council
publication.

Promote your Squidoo lens with a FREE e-Book

Here's a case in point. Here I have combined a series of articles I have developed on the inner game of tennis to create a free e-Book.

The e-Book promotes both an affiliate product on tennis mind strategy and my Squidoo lens on
the inner game of tennis.

You could create a squeeze page to capture the email addresses
of the subscribers and provide them with a series of email
messages on the topic of the e-Book. I have not done that
on this occasion.

You can download the FREE e-Book here now:

The free e-Book is designed as a pre-sell for the affiliate
product on tennis mind strategy.

In Search of Excellence

Thanks to my recent efforts installing the
Twitter Traffic Machine, I discovered two new
Squidoo resource people who are both, in their own
ways, focusing on excellence.

1. Personal Excellence Tips

Mukunda22, aka Kate Loving Shenk, and nurse of 25 years,
has produced a Squidoo lens on 66 Personal Excellence Tips.
This is a challenging lens offering a lifetime of learning.
If you found just one pertinent tip here and implemented
it, your life would be richer and so would that of the people
you impact.

I found Kate's own tip (No.41) particularly relevant:

Gift of attention. Practicing the gift of
attention offers
the perfect mirror for our
self-centered tendencies.
As we engage in
deep listening, the need to fix or
offer
opinion is recognized in stark contrast
to the
mindful presence arising from the
practice. Thus, these
moments of ego are
allowed to pass without resistance.

This is one of the core themes of the management training
I do within the Health Sector across Queensland. I will
be able to use this quote (attributed) when I conduct
workshops in Rockhampton next week. It's something
I also need to put into practise myself.

2. Squidoo Lens Reviews

Squidoo Lensmaster, GrowWear, aka MiMi GrowWear,
has developed a blog to review Squidoo lenses that
exhibit excellence. Her purpose is "to give shout-outs,
nods and promotion to remarkable Squidoo lenses".

Mimi has also developed a Squidoo lens that discusses
her Blog.

On the blog you will find great resources for Squidoo
Lensmasters - interviews with Giant Squids and links
to Squidoo blogs.

The latest lens she reviews is one about a current global
issue - Swine Flu facts.

These are both great resources if you are in search of
excellence!

How to become a Giant Squid

How to Qualify:

You need to create 50 great Squidoo lenses.

Benefits:

From Megan Casey (Editor in Chief, Squidoo)

"1. Access to our (secret) Giant Squids blog and
RSS feed, full of first-looks at new features and
insider tips.

2. A private email address to reach us about
Lens of the Day submissions.

3. A Giant Squid badge on all your lenses.
(And your bio/profile page too).

4. Gold stars on all your published, featured lenses.
Gold stars not only look nifty to your readers,
they also give you a little LensRank boost.

5. Your shot at making The Giant Squids Top 100
list, a list of the top Giant lenses, sorted by LensRank.

6. A Custom Lens Template tool. This one's BIG.
You can have multiple customized lens templates,
to help you pre-populate new lenses with modules
and copy that you like. Makes making lenses faster.

7. Did we mention first crack at our coolest new tools
and features? For example, the Giants got to hear
about HeyMonkeyBrain, Squidaholic.com,
the new dashboard, the Lensmaster Bio redesign,
MagicBuilder, Prediction module, and lots more
--days before the rest of Squidoo.

8. A chance at being featured on the
Giant Squid Community Showcase.

9. The power to nominate! When it's time for
the next round of new Giants to join the ranks
Giants can nominate the people they think
really deserve it.

10. No daily lens limits. Here's another big one!
You can start as many lenses a day as you want,
and you can have as many unimproved lenses
under construction as you need. We trust you.
We know you're going to build them out eventually.

11. Greenlighting. Have you heard of, or run up
against, our SquidDon't spam filter? It checks lenses
for language and topics that are not welcome on
Squidoo. But quite often, while we're playing it safe,
there are false positives. And that can be
frustrating. So we're greenlighting all our Giants,
so you never get stuck in the spam filter again.

12. Bonnie, Patti and Robin: your Giant Squid
Organizers. Heck yes they're a perk (to quote
Napoleon Dynamite). They're in your corner,
constantly representing and supporting and growing
the Giants program. That might be an intangible,
but it's an important one.

And there are new giant perks being
added all the time!
"

For example, 60 Giant Squids will get to have a
phone hook-up with Seth Godin shortly to discuss
questions and future directions for Squidoo.

There are lots of resources to help you become
a Giant Squid:

Twitter Traffic Machine: Build your profile and your followers

I've resisted buying any Twitter traffic program to date.

What convinced me to purchase Twitter Traffic Machine
was:

1. the very reasonable price
2. the ability to build targeted Twitter followers
(not random followers as with some other programs)
3. the capacity to leverage what I already do
(blogging, building and updating Squidoo lenses
and article marketing).

I think this last point was the real selling point for
me. One hour of time invested in setting the
system up paid immediate dividends with the
first wave of new Twitter followers...and this
recruiting will be ongoing without any
intervention on my part.

What I like is the ability to focus (and re-focus)
my follower recruitment.

I've had to change my original stance of limiting
the number of people I follow. However, this
has given me a richer store of tweets to view.
(I also discovered belatedly that I can view earlier
tweets by just pressing "more" - so I can access
the posts of my favorite people).

The Twitter Traffic Machine is certainly a way to build
your profile and Twitter following on auto-pilot.

You can check out the Twitter recruiting program here:
Twitter Traffic Machine

P.S. Twitter Traffic Machine has a great affiliate program
that is viral in nature and pays 50%.

Internet Marketing Success

One of the things I have talked about recently is the way you can build your Internet business.

It's very much a building process.

You develop one Squidoo lens then another and eventually you can build a lens ring.

You start writing articles and gradually turn them
into a free e-book that enables you to promote your
site or your affiliate products.

"Internet Marketing Success" is a case in point.

Here, I've taken a number of my articles on Internet
marketing and built them into a free e-Book around the
theme of success factors for online marketing.

New habits can be personally transforming

I used to often find that I would spend two hours
each morning just processing my email.

I would handle enquiries, delete unwanted email
and explore new products, programs and marketing
ideas.

The latter activity would eat up my time as I followed
one link to another...to another...etc.

At the end of two hours, I would be frustrated that
I had not achieved anything and wasted a lot of
potentially productive and creative time and energy
(I'm a morning person).

However, I have since developed the habit of
using my best creative time for writing.

I think about what I want to achieve each day in
terms of output and start with the activity required
to achieve the outcome.

I then fit email processing around the available time
rather than the other way around.

This new habit is bringing me closer to achieving my
current goals.

Gradually, I'm building a routine that is productive
and rewarding (a difficult task given that I'm not
a routine person).

The problem with developing new habits is that
you have to unlearn old habits (which by definition
are "ingrained behaviors").

It's one think to change our beliefs and assumptions
about our daily routine, it's another to get our
behavior to line up with these new insights.

The payoff - new habits that can be personally
transforming and bring you closer to your goals.

Why I Love Affiliate Marketing - Part 1 - Jimmy D. Brown

NOTE: The following is a guest post from one of my
favorite internet marketing mentors. I have just completed
a 12 month training course on membership sites with Jimmy
and it was full of value. There was so much in it that I can
continue to extract learning from it over many months.

By Jimmy D. Brown of "Affiliatenaire"

Do you find yourself "starting" to create your own product
to sell online, but never "finishing" it?

One of the things I love about affiliate marketing is --

** You don't need to create your own products **

Many people find the idea of creating their own products to
be an overwhelming and even paralyzing task.

* I don't have any good ideas!
* I'm not a writer!
* There's too much competition!
* I don't know how to set everything up!
* I can't figure out where to start!
* It's too hard!

These are just a few of the valid reasons many people give
when it comes to not creating their own products to sell.
I'm sure with a few minutes of brainstorming, we could come
up with a list of many more.

With affiliate marketing, you don't need your own products.
You simply promote someone else's already proven successful
offer for a commission.

And, truth be told, even if you ARE a writer and you DO have
lots of ideas and you CAN figure it all out...

** Nobody wants to create new products all the time **

As good as you may be, you don't know everything! Why try
to create a product on every topic imaginable in your
market when you can earn just as much money by simply
promoting someone else's really good offer as one of your
profit streams?

That's why I love affiliate marketing.

You don't need to create your own products.

The Joy of Squidoo - Squidoo recipes

Megan Casey and Seth Godin produced their e-Book,
The Joy of Squidoo, as a cookbook of ideas for
Squidoo lenses.

Here's their take on the e-Book:

The idea for this cookbook is very simple. Once you
see how creatively (and
successfully) other people
use Squidoo, you’ll be more likely to use it well yourself.

That’s why people watch The Food Network, after all.
To get inspired by the tasty
possibilities.

The Joy of Squidoo gives you a bit of background, some
Squidoo groundrules and principles, and then a list of 26
examples (recipes) of how Squidoo can be used.

It is well worth a look to gain ideas and ways you can use
this marvellous platform to share your ideas, passions
and propensities.

Squidoo: Animoto for fun and traffic

Have you got heaps of digital photos in your camera or
on your computer? Or are you storing boxes or albums
of photos from your trips, holidays or family events?

Well, Animoto now provides a way to have fun
and create traffic for your Squidoo lenses.

The video above was created from photos I took on
a rainforest walk in Brisbane. Animoto
is a superb, easy-to-use technology that can convert
your photos into animated musical videos (now with
text as well). The program uses the latest in
cinematology technology to create your personalized
video.

The program offers a free option or a paid option.
The paid option enables you to produce as many videos
as you choose with no limitation on length (free ones
are limited to 30 seconds). You can also access
the music library with the paid version which is
currently a one-time payment of $30 (or $25
if you join through one of the links on this post
or on my Animoto lens).

The technology is so simple, here's the steps:

1. upload your photos to Animoto
2. add music with a push of a button
3. add text (where desired)
4. press the button and, bingo, a new video

If you don't like the way the animated musical
video comes out, just press the create button again
for a different video.

Then with a press of a button you can upload
your Animoto video to YouTube. The secret is to link
your new video to an appropriate lens when
you upload it to the various video sites
- and you
automatically tap into the current video traffic
explosion. This then becomes a source of viral traffic
as people start sharing your videos across the
social networks.

You can see more detail of how Animoto works
by visiting my Animoto lens where I have more
of my videos:

New Animoto Widget for Squidoo

Squidoo has now joined forces with Animoto to create
a widget that enables you to embed your Animoto
videos in your lenses. Chef Keem, Giant Squid and
Squid Angel, shows you how to add your Animoto video
to your Squidoo lens:

Animoto Affiliate Program

Animoto has a unique affiliate program. Members who
join through your link, receive a $5 discount on the
annual paid membership fee. As an affiliate, you receive
3 months paid membership free for each person you recruit
to Animoto who takes out a paid membership. For instance,
I paid once in April 2008 but now have a paid
membership to April 2010 because of my paid referrals.

Interviewed by Kris Jones, CEO of Pepperjam Network

On 14 August 2008, Kris Jones, CEO of
Pepperjam Affiliate Marketing Network,
interviewed me about Squidoo and affiliate
marketing.

He was particularly interested in the benefits
that Squidoo provides over blogging.

I explained in the interview that the real marketing
benefits occur when Squidoo is treated as the
marketing hub and other approaches such as
blogging, article marketing, Facebook, Twitter,
etc are treated as the spokes.

PS - apologies for a lack of posts lately - I had a major
